IS TROPICAL
IS TROPICAL are Gary Barber, Dominic Apa and Simon Milner, covered up in masks. Forming in 2009, they hit the ground running with a quick stint of live dates and club nights, using this accumulated experience to develop their live show and songs simultaneously. Improvised sounds and scrounged instruments shaped their overall sound, which ranges from raw pop anthems to lo-fi dance songs.
IS TROPICAL’s songwriting process mirrors their live show - swapping instruments, improvising and layering sounds to create a constantly changing soundscape. Influenced by “whatever music is around at the time of song writing, whether we like it or not”, IS TROPICAL’s sound is varied and disjointed, giving the impression of a band uninterested in limiting itself to an overly coherent style. This schizophrenic approach to songwriting is reflected in the band’s first single, ‘When O When’, which rattles through different rhythms and styles in a way unlike a typical 3-and-a-half minute pop formula.
IS TROPICAL’s ‘When O When’ is released on Hit Club Records on November 23rd. Woop!
